Hi, welcome to my site. My full name is Philip Davies but please, if you contact me in any manner, just call me Phil. Only my mother calls me Philip! I’m 52 years old and working towards my 53rd birthday.
To justify why I have a website on Overcoming Worry I am going to tell you a brief story of my life and potential worries and anxieties that could have led to stress.
To be honest I did worry about everything as a youth. My looks, image, breath, going out, not going out, no girlfriend, my girlfriend. I think you’ve got the picture! Not much different from other young lads of the day. But, age and circumstances has taught me that worrying serves no purpose at all.
If you cannot stop worrying then I suggest you do a similar exercise to the one I did which is to list the major events in your life that have, or could have, caused worry. The objective is to show the potential for or actual worry that you have been open to and hopefully the realisation that worry has not had any influence on those events whatsoever.
Here goes:-
Age 17 beaten up by police, arrested and convicted of threatening behaviour. Later cleared at crown court. Passed driving test and immediately crashed car. Had time off work for anxiety and stress – too much worry!
Teens – as supporter of Wolves football team watched them demoted three successive seasons. Attacked outside Wembley following Wolves winning League Cup Final. Knocked down by car whilst crossing road (a little merry!)
Early Middle Age – Prohibited from leaving country whilst working in Beirut. While there had no money and relied on other people’s charity to eat. Was in partnership with a violent English binge drinker and an ex South African arms dealer (or so he said). Arrested for alleged fraud! Left country with the aid of the British Embassy and a very generous friend back in UK who paid my air fare
Later life – Divorced, house cleared by other half whilst I was away on business.
Last five years – Broke ribs coughing. Went blind for six months following cataract operation. This was followed with a detached retina. Declared bankrupt following the closure of a recruitment business. Attacked by an intruder, suffering broken ribs again!! Broke shoulder blade trying to get onto a hammock. Broke back at same time as liver failed. Couldn’t walk properly for months and had to have liver transplant!
What’s the point in worrying? From girlfriends to liver transplant. It all happened and whatever amount of worry I endured it couldn’t have had any effect! So my advice is to stop worrying. What will be will be. And throughout this site I hope to give some tips as to how to overcome worry.
Stay with me, I’m one of the lucky ones!
